Located on Machias Seal Island in the Gulf of Maine, roughly 12 miles from Grand Manan Island, Canada and Cutler, Maine. Both Canada and the United States claim ownership of the island, but the Canadian Coast Guard maintains lightkeepers "for sovereignty purposes", making it the only remaining manned light station in Eastern Canada. Machias Seal Island is a protected wildlife sanctuary, and home to Atlantic puffins, razorbills, Arctic terns and a number of other seabirds. Closeup views of the lighthouse are possible via birdwatching tours that land at or circle the island.
