The only remaining signs of the majestic light are a few bricks from the tower base that surface now and then, and its old oil house.

It was built at the top of Donkin Hill; a high hill upon which Sir Rufane Donkin; the former governor of Port Elizabeth; built a memorial pyramid for his late wife; Elizabeth Donkin; who died before she could step foot into the city. Therefore; Sir Donkin named the town Port Elizabeth in honour of his wife. The lighthouse is known as "The Hill" lighthouse due to the hill that it sits on. In 1861; the first Donkin Hill tower began service. Upon reaching the beginning of the 20th century; the old wooden tower was demolished and replaced by a newer, taller, and stronger concrete tower in 1903. The lighthouse continued to serve until the early 1960's when the ever growing city began to block the light. The keepers were fed up afterwards; so on Halloween night 1973; the Donkin Hill lighthouse was decommissioned; with no future plans for automation. The lighthouse stood dormant nearly 6 years until a private group came along and took control of the lighthouse. Then one night; the people of Port Elizabeth saw a light shining from the lighthouse. It had been turned back on as a decorative light to the city. Today; the Donkin Hill lighthouse's original 4th order Fresnel Lens shines it's blue light every night as a decorative light to the cit. The tower is open for climbing all year round for a small or no fee at all. The keeper's house contains the info center for the lighthouse. The light was replaced by a new fully automated yet very unattractive skeletal tower near the harbour called the Deal light.

The rear range was upgraded in 1992 with a fluorescent orange triangular day mark with a black vertical stripe. The rear light's day mark is inverted relative to the front range so that when a vessel is in the channel, the tips of the triangular day marks are point to point and the vertical black stripes are aligned.

The light is paired with the rear range light to guide ships into the deep water channel that parallels the Canadian shore in this part of the river.

The original tower was circular white with a red upper portion. The light exhibits a fixed white dioptric light at a focal plane of 19.5 feet.

In 1992 the light was improved with a triangular orange day mark with a black vertical stripe.

The third image shows the front range paired with the rear range which has an inverted fluorescent orange triangular day mark with a black stripe. When the stripes are vertically aligned, as they are in this photograph, the vessel is in the channel. The fourth image shows the shore and the relative locations of the front and rear lights.

Mariners, however, complained that the light from it wasn't bright enough, prompting Congress to appropriate funds for a new lighthouse on the island in 1867. The lighthouse was built in 1868 and consisted of a 46 foot tower. The lighthouse was subsequently deactivated in 1902. The lighthouse has been extensively renovated and is now open in the summer for tours with a resident summer keeper on the island. Tours are available through the Norwalk Seaport Association (http://www.seaport.org). Much of Sheffield Island is now a wildlife preserve.

Several hurricanes during the 1990s caused extensive erosion of the island and wire baskets filled with stone are now being placed in an effort to prevent further erosion.

It is visible from land.

This lighthouse has been privately owned since its automation in 1953 and is now operated as a private aid to navigation.

When I photographed it in September 2009 on a rather rainy and foggy afternoon, it was looking like it was in pretty sorry condition.

An offshore light square wooden pyramidal light was built atop a concrete filled iron caisson in 1890. The light, when it was in operation had a focal plane of just over 40 feet. Originally the light exhibited a fixed white light from the lantern room; a red sector was added later based on request from mariners.

In 1965 the light was removed from its foundation and replaced by a skeletal steel tower. The lighthouse was loaded onto a barge that went aground on a sand bar. It took a year before there was a tide high enough to refloat the barge, after which the lighthouse was relocated to land where it now stands. The Cold Spring Harbor light is the only lighthouse on Long Island that has ever been moved.

The lighthouse was completed in 1874; its foundation sits 11 feet beneath the surface of Lake Huron. A crib 92 feet square and 24 feet high was built on the site and the foundation of the lighthouse sits on bedrock on the bottom of the lake.

The lighthouse is a conical limestone structure 93 feet tall and 32 feet in diameter at the base. The surface of the limestone crib is 12 feet above the mean lake level.

Spectacle Reef is named for the shape of the reef it stands atop, which from above looks like a pair of glasses or spectacles beneath the waters of Lake Huron.

The lighthouse had a 2nd order Henry-Lepaute Fresnel lens in the lantern room which is now on display in the Inland Seas Museum in Vermillion, Ohio. The lighthouse is automated and still in service with a modern optic that flashes white and red at 60 second intervals that is visible for 17 miles.

The lighthouse is the check in point for commercial vessels that are downbound from Lake Superior under Soo Control.

The light station was built in 1912 and consists of two buildings, a boat house, and the 48 foot tall hexagonal concrete tower. The tower is topped with a 10 sided lantern room now equipped with a modern optic.

This particular lighthouse is relatively unique in that it has a beaver wind vane atop the lantern room. It is one of only two in Canada so equipped -- the other is at Belle Isle North in Newfoundland.

To get there you can take a boat trip from the main Island St Marys but they run infrequently as the weather has to be fine and the sea flat.

The Isles of Scilly are a mass of granite islets that provide a serious hazard to shipping. This was the second lighthouse constructed on the site. The first was washed away before it was finished.

The stretch of water between the island and Islay is only a few hundred yards but the current is horrendous during foul weather. The families stayed in Bowmore, although in the beginning they did live out on the island with the keepers. To make a phone call to the shore station, the signal would be transmitted all the way to Ayr on the mainland and them re-transmitted back to Bowmore. There are two villages across the way, Portnahaven and Port Wemyss both vie over who is the best . In the past they argued so much that the Island council built a church in order that it might bring them together. They fought over the common entrance door and in the end only settled when they had one each with separate pews and floor.

The lighthouse sits on a granite strewn strand on the south of the island. The top of the craig is a lofty 1133 ft above sea level.

The light was the last paraffin incandescent lights in Britain. Ailsa Craig is commonly called Paddy's Milestone as it lies approximately halfway between Glasgow and Belfast.

The granite used to be quarried for making curling stones and there was a thriving community on the island. When the quarriers left so did the keepers families and a Shore Station was built to house them in Girvan.

The island has had a checkered history and has been fought over many times. The foundations for the lighthouse were built on pre-existing fortifications. During the first and second world wars the island had gun emplacements and anti aircraft batteries. There was a Lloyd's Shipping Station there that handled radio traffic for shipping round the world.

The tower is painted a stone color and was the last to be painted by the keepers themselves before all towers were put out to tender to outside contractors.

Unusually for a Scottish lighthouse, it does not have the classical tower but what appears to be an addition to the buildings; of course it was designed and made that way. Its neighbor across the bay at Dunnet Head has the honor of being the northernmost point on the mainland of Britain.

It is also remarkable in its position in the bay rather than on the headland. Just down the road is the Ferry terminal at Scrabster, which services the ferries across to Orkney.

A few miles up the coast was Dounreay, an atomic power station and reprocessing plant. It closed a few years ago because of the threat of contamination caused by erosion of the substrata.

The lighthouse is the highest in Britain - on some days it is shrouded in low cloud and at night the light is only visible to passing aircraft. The largest town in the region is Castlebay, with its picturesque castle owned by the chief of the clan McNeil. The islands are serviced by an airport that boasts Britain's only beach runway, so it is really only suitable for light aircraft and seaplanes, and of course the schedule is dependent on the tide.

There is no road to the lighthouse so reliefs were made by boat from Port Askaig or the distillery at Coila.
There are spectacular views looking across to Jura and up the Sound. On the clearest of days Dubh Artach can be seen nearly twenty miles away. Ruvaal is one of four major lighthouses on Islay. The keepers families lived in Bowmore. Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebridean islands.

Sule comes form the Norse for gannet and though no gannets nest on Sule Skerry they do nest on close by Sule Stack, Stack is a rock outcrop and Skerry is a larger rocky island. The island lies on the fringes of the Pentland Firth so you could say that the island and the lighthouse are guardians of the Firth.

Puffins burrow in the soil and there is a substantial colony there.

The Craigantlet crashed into the rocks in 1982; the weather was calm and the incident was attributed to human error. Because of the risk of toxic cargo, the lighthouse keepers and their families were forced to abandon the station. The Principal Keeper attending only to put the light on at night and off in the morning. Eventually, the keepers returned home after about 6 weeks absence. After a period of automation, the lighthouse became unlit in 2007

Like all of Scotland's lighthouses, it is automatic. In 1987, the foghorn sounded for the last time and overnight made all of the keepers bar one redundant. It is one of the few lighthouses open to the public and is open from Easter through till the end of October. Because the Mull of Galloway is Scotland's most southerly point, the lighthouse gets visitors from around the world. The National Trust for Scotland has cottages there that can be rented out.
