Description
Conical brick tower is the tallest tower in Oregon at 93 feet. Original 1st order Fresnel lens still installed and operating in the lighthouse, sending the light 19 miles to sea.
The light was electrified in the mid 1930s, at which time the fixed light was given a signature of 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on and 14 seconds off, which is followed today.
A six month renovation was just completed and the lighthouse was reopened to the public on July 1, 2006.
Directions: From Newport, travel north on US 101 (N Oregon Coast Highway) about three miles to Agate Beach. Turn west on Lighthouse Drive and follow it to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is located in the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) resource.
Tours/admission: Entrance to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area requires a $5.00 fee per vehicle, although savings are available through a passport program or yearly passes. There is no fee for the excellent interpretive center or lighthouse, but donations are suggested. The intepretive center and lighthouse tours are managed by Yaquina Lights, Inc., a non profit, 501.c.3 organization.

Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area Grounds - The entrance gate is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year
Interpretive Center - Mid-June to Labor Day 9:00 to 5:00; September and October 10:00 to 5:00; Winter 10:00 to 4:00
Lighthouse - Mid-June to Labor Day 9:00 to 4:00; September and October Monday through Friday self guided tours only 12:00 to 4:00; Saturday and Sunday ranger led tours from 9:00 to 11:30 (on the 1/2 hour), self guided tours 12:00 to 4:00; Winter months self guided tours only 12:00 to 4:00
Note: Children must be at least 42" tall to climb the lighthouse stairs. Children may not be carried up the 110 steps of the lighthouse.
Additional notes from Rwhitwer: Very nice visitor center. Lighthouse just went through an extensive (and well done) restoration.

This is a great visitor experience. The docents dress in period costume, and taught my kids some 19th-century games. You can climb to the tower, and there's a museum with rest rooms. On the day I visited, they had a special sunset viewing time, but they kick you out as soon as the sun sets.
