Description
Brick lined cast iron tower sits at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod where Buzzard's Bay, Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound meet. The original lighthouse was a "Cape Cod" style house with the lantern mounted on the roof. This style of lighthouse had problems with the roof due to the stress from the lantern and the lighthouse at Nobska was rebuilt in 1849 due to these problems. The current tower was originally fitted with a 5th order Fresnel lens which was upgraded to a 4th order lens in 1888. The 4th order lens is still installed in the tower. Nobska Light has a unique characteristic of appearing red when viewed from the east, due to a red section in the window to warn mariners of the Hedge Fence and L'Hommedieu Shoals.
The keepers dwelling, also built in 1876, is the home for the Sector Commander of Sector Southeastern New England of the United States Coast Guard.

Directions: From Route 28 in the west end of Falmouth, turn south on to Locust Street. Locust Street will become Woods Hole Road. Continue on Woods Hole Road towards Woods Hole. You can turn right at Nobska Road and follow it until you reach the lighthouse. Alternatively, you can pass Nobska Road and continue to Church Street. Turn right on Church Street and follow it to the lighthouse. As you come out of the trees and onto the flat beach with Nobska Pond on your left, you will have an excellent view of the lighthouse from a distance. There is a small parking area at the point.

This is an extremely pretty lighthouse. The only bad thing is that it is usually closed. But the ground for just the light are open which is nice. The drive to this light is so nice. You can see Marthas Vineyard from it.
