Description
The light that stands atop San Felipe del Morro Fort today is the third lighthouse in its location. The first was built in 1846 and was replaced by another in 1876. In 1898, the second tower was hit in an attack by Sampson's US fleet during the Spanish American War. In 1899, the brick foundation was salvaged and in 1908, the third tower was built atop the foundation. It was fitted with a third order Fresnel lens that is still in use today.
