Description
Situated at the entrance to the Thames River in New London, CT, New London Ledge Lighthouse was created to warn mariners of the dangerous underwater ledges in the area, which the New London Harbor Lighthouse was inadequate in doing. After several unsucessful petitions to create the light in the mid-to-late 1800's, the Lighthouse Board was able to secure funds for construction in 1902 and 1903, and New London Ledge Light began operations in 1909.
Despite its distinctive red brick and house-like appearance, the lighthouse is probably best known for its reputation for being haunted. It is said that a lighthouse keeper named Ernie committed suicide from the top of the tower after witnessing his wife with the captain of the passing Block Island Ferry. Later keepers from the Coast Guard would report strange noises, doors opening and closing on their own, TVs turning on and off, and objects being thrown across the room.
New London Ledge Light stands 58 feet above water level, and can be seen from the beautiful campus of the University of Connecticut - Avery Point. One can see seven lighthouses from the tower on a clear day. There are plans to turn the lighthouse into a Bed and Breakfast.

New London Ledge Light is definitely worth a trip out to see! Project Oceanology has a great little boat tour out to it that also passes by Avery Point and New London Harbor Light. They explain the history of the lighthouse and how the lighthouse works, and even give some insight about some of the strange occurences that happen in the lighthouse. Well worth it!

New London Ledge Light is truly a unique sight -- a square red-bricked three story house rising out of the water, topped by a lantern room. Add the mystery of possibly being haunted, and this lighthouse rates a ten in my book. The only negative is that it can only be reached by boat, but I can't subtract any points as that is the nature of all open-water lights.
