Description
The Lorain west breakwater lighthouse sits well out into Lake Erie providing navigational aid for marine traffic into Lorain Harbor. Many breakwaters are walkable for the determined lighthouse visitor -- this one REALLY isn't (see photos).
The lighthouse is now owned by the Lorain Historical Society and considerable effort has been invested in its refurbishment, with numerous corporate sponsors, including the Glidden Company who donated the white paint used to repaint the lighthouse. The lighthouse leans several degrees from plumb due to a "close encounter" with a ship years ago.
This light is best seen from the water although distant views can be had from various locations in Lorain along Lake Erie.
