Description
The South Foreland lighthouse built in 1843 is the second lighthouse built in the area where it stands atop the white cliffs of Dover. The Old South Foreland lighthouse, b uilt in 1793, is not far away and stands nearly on the edge of the cliffs. The present South Foreland lighthouse is an octagonal white tower that stands 69 feet high that still has a 1st order Fresnel lens in its lantern room. The lighthouse now belongs to the National Trust and is open to visitors. Marconi the inventor of radio performed his "wireless" experiments here. This was also the site of Faraday's first, electrically-powered light.
If you visit the South Foreland lighthouse, be wary of going close to the edge of the white cliffs. There are numerous cracks and they are prone to pieces of the cliff breaking away without any warning.
