Description
The New Dungeness lighthouse was built in the late 1950's when the construction of the Dungeness Power Station obscured the light from what is now referred to as the Old Dungeness lighthouse to the west. The New Dungeness lighthouse is the 5th light constructed in this area, the first was a brick tower with a fire on it's open top constructed in 1615.
The Google map shows the relationship of the Old and New Dungeness lighthouses with the Dungeness nuclear power station immediately to the west of the Old Dungeness light.
The New Dungeness light has an interesting spiral concrete ramp base and the fog horn is integral to the top of the concrete structure of the lighthouse. The light has a black and white band daymark. The area is open to visitors but the grounds immediately around the New Dungeness light are not open.
The New Dungeness light was flood lighted at night beginning in 1962 to make it's day marking visible at night from the sea. The light from the tower is visible 27 miles at sea.
