Description
Turtle Island straddles the border between Ohio and Michigan. The island is named after Chief Little Turtle. The island, unlike others in Lake Erie, is comprised of sand and gravel rather than stone. As a result, much of the area of the island has been washed away by lake storms over the past several centuries. The Turtle Island lighthouse was built as a 44 foot stone tower in 1832. The lighthouse was active until 1904 when the Toledo Harbor lighthouse was finally built. At that point, Turtle Island was decomissioned. It is now only a shell. The island is privately owned and the only way to see turtle island is by boat.
