Description
Point Sur occupys the top of a 361 foot tall rock midway on the California coast between the tall towers at Pigeon Point and Piedras Blancas. The lighthouse was built in 1887 and originally housed a Fresnel lens. Life at Point Sur was isolated. Access to the top of the rock was originally by a tramway, the road that now snakes around the rock and up to the top on the seaward side was not constructed until 1900. US 1, the coast highway was not completed until 1937.
By way of explanation of the photographs, the deck prisms are set in the floor of the lantern room. Each is inscribed with the name of the donor for their support of the restoration and maintenance of Point Sur. The view looking up at the keeper's residence and the watertower has an interesting story. The water tower reproduction was built by a telecommunications company in exchange for allowing them to place equipment inside the water tower. The last photograph in the sequence is the rarely photographed north face of the lighthouse.
