Description
The Esopus Meadows lighthouse was built in 1839 to guide shipping around a submerged mudbar in the Hudson River. The first lighthouse on this location was a twin of the Rondout Lighthouse further upriver at Kingston. Ice on the river damaged the original lighthouse leading to the construction of a new lighthouse a few yards south of the original lighthouse in 1872. The lighthouse was transferred to the Save Esopus Lighthouse commission formed in 1990. Since 2003, a light has again shone from the Esopus Meadows lighthouse. Interior restoration is on-going. The intent of the SELC is to open the lighthouse for tours when the interior restoration is completed.
The light can be seen from Lighthouse Park which runs along the west side of the Hudson. The best views, however, are from the water on the Rip Van Winkle river trips from Kingston. The posted photograph was shot from Lighthouse Park at a focal length of 600 mm with the camera's chip set on DX, giving an effective focal length of 900 mm.
