Description
Gull Island is barely that. The island sits roughly north northeast of Michigan Island in the Apostle Island Archipelago. The lighthouse here is nothing more than a skeletal tower that was established in 1928 to warn ships away from this navigational hazard that were cutting between Michigan Island and Outer Island on their way to Duluth.
The keepers on Michigan Island were responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the light and skeletal steel tower on Gull Island.
Gull Island is now part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and is under the administration of hte National Park Service although the light is still maintained by the USCG.
