Description
Halfway Rock is named for its location in Casco Bay, roughly half way between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Small. The light is indispensable to mariners in the heavy coastal fog that sometimes blankets the sea in Casco Bay.
The lighthouse is now licensed to the American Lighthouse Foundation which is now in the process of efforts to preserve, maintain, and restore this remote lighthouse, which is listed among the most endangered.
The posted dawn photo was shot from the upper deck of the MV Carnival Victory headed into Portland. Ram Island Ledge lighthouse is in the foreground on the right, Halfway Rock is on the horizon. Views from land can be obtained by turning onto Maine 24 in Cook's Corner and following it to its terminus on Bailey Island. The daylight photo posted was shot from this location at 900 mm.
