Description
A light station was established at Split Rock Point south of Essex on the western shore of Lake Champlain in 1835. The present octagonal limestone tower, stopped by a white lantern room with a gray roof was built in 1867. This has been a private residence since 1831. The lighthouse was inactive from 1928-2003. In 1928, the light was moved to a red, skeletal steel tower closer to the water but in 2003, the USCG moved the light back to the tower.
Views of the lighthouse from near the end of Thompsons Point Road on the Vermont side of the lake can be had of the lighthouse across the lake. Morning provides the best light.
