Description
A light station was established on Juniper Island in 1826 followed by a lighthouse in 1846. The lighthouse on the island has been dark since 1952 and is the oldest intact cast iron lighthouse in the US. The lighthouse is a cylindrical tower with gallery and lantern room. The keeper's residence burned in 1962 but has been reconstructed by the owners of the property using recovered brick from the original structure.
When the lighthouse was darkened, the official light was moved by the USCG to a skeletal black steel tower closer to shore. The trees on the island have grown up virtually obscuring the lighthouse from the water. It is partially visible through the trees when the trees are leafless in the winter and early spring.
