Description
Point Au Roche, navigationally, was an important light because of the La Roche reef just south of Isle La Motte, requiring vessels to steer to the east to avoid the shoals. The light was activated in 1858. The lighthouse is an octagonal blue limestone tower. In the 1930's, when all of the other lights on Lake Champlain were moved to steel skeletal towers, the light in Point Au Roche was maintained.
In 1934, the wooden keeper's cottage and surrounding property were sold, leaving just the lighthouse. As the shoreline has eroded away near the base of the lighthouse, it has become unsafe, a piece of the cornice from below the lantern room falling off the tower. In 1989, the lighthouse was deemed to be no longer suitable to maintain the light and the official light was moved to a buoy on La Roche Reef.
