Description
The lighthouse at Punta Angeles was established in 1838, the original tower replaced by a brick tower in 1857 that was destroyed by the earthquake of 1906. The present 59 foot cast iron tower was erected in 1908. The tower was relocated slightly in 1967 inside the grounds of the Punta Angeles Maritime Complex.
The lighthouse, based on photos, is in beautiful condition and the keeper's residence is manned. The tower is white with a broad red band. The lantern room is also painted red. The lighthouse stands atop a bluff with a commanding view of the Pacific Ocean on what I would consider the southern outskirts of the city of Valpariso. This light is definitely one that I plan to physically visit the next time I'm in that part of South America.
We saw the flash of the light in the dark as we were entering Valparaiso but I was unable to get any photographs of this beautiful lighthouse.
