Description
Barra Head is on the island of Berneray, which is the southermost of the Outer Hebridean Chain of islands.
The lighthouse is the highest in Britain - on some days it is shrouded in low cloud and at night the light is only visible to passing aircraft. The largest town in the region is Castlebay, with its picturesque castle owned by the chief of the clan McNeil. The islands are serviced by an airport that boasts Britain's only beach runway, so it is really only suitable for light aircraft and seaplanes, and of course the schedule is dependent on the tide.
