Description
Holburn Head Lighthouse lies in Thurso Bay. Unusually for a Scottish lighthouse, it does not have the classical tower but what appears to be an addition to the buildings; of course it was designed and made that way. Its neighbor across the bay at Dunnet Head has the honor of being the northernmost point on the mainland of Britain.
It is also remarkable in its position in the bay rather than on the headland. Just down the road is the Ferry terminal at Scrabster, which services the ferries across to Orkney.
A few miles up the coast was Dounreay, an atomic power station and reprocessing plant. It closed a few years ago because of the threat of contamination caused by erosion of the substrata.
