Description
Inchkeith lies in the Firth of Forth and is the closest lighthouse to The Northern Lighthouse Board's Head Quarters in Edinburgh.
The island has had a checkered history and has been fought over many times. The foundations for the lighthouse were built on pre-existing fortifications. During the first and second world wars the island had gun emplacements and anti aircraft batteries. There was a Lloyd's Shipping Station there that handled radio traffic for shipping round the world.
The tower is painted a stone color and was the last to be painted by the keepers themselves before all towers were put out to tender to outside contractors.
