Description
Rinns of Islay lies on the island of Orsay, off the SW corner of Islay. The stretch of water between the island and Islay is only a few hundred yards but the current is horrendous during foul weather. The families stayed in Bowmore, although in the beginning they did live out on the island with the keepers. To make a phone call to the shore station, the signal would be transmitted all the way to Ayr on the mainland and them re-transmitted back to Bowmore. There are two villages across the way, Portnahaven and Port Wemyss both vie over who is the best . In the past they argued so much that the Island council built a church in order that it might bring them together. They fought over the common entrance door and in the end only settled when they had one each with separate pews and floor.
