Description
Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. The first lighthouse at this location was a 30 foot tower built in 1829. That tower was replaced by another 30 foot tower in 1839, and finally by the brick keeper's residence with an integral 38 foot tower that was built in 1867. The 1867 lighthouse still stands and is now a private residence that is in the process of being beautifully restored by the present owners.
The lighthouse was deactivated in 1924 and is best seen by either private boat or the eastbound Shepler's cruise out of Mackinac.
