DescriptionActive This light was automated in 1921, deactivated in 1933 and reactivated in 1980. The light is open to the public and in care of the National Park Service. On september 12, 1885, Sand Island Lightkeeper Charles Lederlee spotted the wooden steamer PRUSSIA burning and making a dash for the island. Keeper Lederlee took to his rowboat and pulled through the stormy weather to the rescue of the boats crew.
