DescriptionThere have been five lighthouses in the vicinity of what is now known as the Old Dungeness lighthouse. The first was built in 1615 and consisted of a brick tower with an open fire atop it. The 2nd and 3rd lighthouses were successively taller. The 4th lighthouse, now known as the Old Dungeness lighthouse stands 150 feet tall and was dedicated to service in 1904. The construction of the Dungeness Power station in the 1950's made it obvious that the light from the Old Dungeness light would be obstructed by the height of the buildings of the power station, prompting the construction of the New Dungeness lighthouse. The old lighthouse was decommissioned and removed from service in 1960 and now serves as a museum. The lighthouse is open for visitors and tours are offered.
