DescriptionA gravel shoal sits just 14 feet below the water level 2.5 miles off Cheboygan. Originally, this navigation hazard was marked by a buoy that was replaced by a lighted acetylene buoy in 1925. The Fourteen Foot Shoal lighthouse was built by the crew responsible for the construction of the Martin Reef and Poe Reef lights and first exhibited a light for the 1930 shipping season. This station was never manned -- it was controlled remotely by the keepers on Poe Reef.
This light is best seen either from private water craft or from the Shepler's east tours that operate in the summer months. The photo posted was shot at 800 mm on a less than optimal day to use a lens with this long of a focal length.
