The first lighthouse at what is now Fort Niagara was a beacon on the roof of the fort placed in 1781. A wooden tower was erected in 1804 and demoised in 1814. The next lighthouse was built in 1823. The current lighthouse at Fort Niagara in Fort Niagara State Park was built in 1871 and a light first exhibited form the original octagonal limestone tower in 1872. The height of the tower was increased in 1900 by a little over 11 feet with brickwork atop the original limestone tower. The lighthouse served until 1993 when it was decomissioned by the USCG.
