DescriptionThe conical cast iron Harbor Beach lighthouse stands astride the breakwater separating Harbor Beach from Lake Huron. The lighthouse was built in 1885 and stands 45 feet tall, giving the light a 54 foot focal plane. The town of Harbor Beach has applied for ownership of the lighthouse that was approved but the official transfer has been delayed by the logistics of the need for a bottomland lease by the State of Michigan for any owner other than the Federal Government. The Harbor Beach Lighthouse Society has maintained the light since the 1980s and will continue to do so after the official transfer is completed. The 4th order Fresnel lens from the lighthouse is on display in the Grice Museum in Harbor Beach.
The breakwater stands a significant distance from shore so a long lens is required (500 mm for the full frame photo shown) for close-up photos of the lighthouse. Sunrise opportunities at Harbor Beach can be spectacular.
