DescriptionTibbetts Point Lighthouse stands at the juncture of Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River several miles upriver from the village of Cape Vincent. The need for a lighthouse at this site was realized early and the first light was established in 1827. The present tower was built in 1854 at which time a 4th order Fresnel lens (still in service) was installed in the cast iron lantern room. The USCG was in charge of the light from1939-1981 when the lighthouse was automated. The Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Society was formed in 1988 and the visitor's center was built on the site in 1993, which is now staffed by members of the society when it is open. The site is also a youth hostel.
