DescriptionThe Port Austin Reef Light was built in 1878 to mark a dangerous shoal that extends to the east for a significant distance from where the lighthouse stands atop it. The light sits about 2.5 miles off shore and a long telephone and clear cold air are necessary for good photographs to be obtained from land. (The seeing wasn't the greatest the day the posted photo was shot.)
The lighthouse is not open to the public and was scheduled to be demolished in 1984 when Louis Schillinger of Port Austin obtained a 5 year lease to work on the restoration of the lighthouse. The Port Austin Reef Lighthouse Assoc. was formed in 1988 and further restoration work is planned.
The lighthouse originally had a 4th order Fresnel lens that has since been replaced with a 300 mm modern optic.
