DescriptionThe light on Alcatraz Island was the first lighthouse built on the west coast in 1854. The original lighthouse used a 3rd order Fresnel lens. The present octagonal concrete pyramidal tower dates from 1909 and was equipped with a 4th order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse stands adjacent to the infamous Alcatraz prison and is still an active aid to navigation in SF Bay. Tours to Alcatraz leave from pier 41.
The photograph posted was shot at a focal length of 600 mm from Marin County. The Oakland Bay Bridge is seen in the background to the left; Treasure Island is in the background to the right.
