DescriptionPlum Island has long been a popular resort originally served by steamships and a trolley line. The lighthouse was refurbished by the USCG in 1994; in 2003 the ownership of the lighthouse, which is still an active aid to navigation, was turned over to the town of Newburyport, which now leases the lighthouse to the Friends of Plum Island Light. The Friends organization is continuing to restore the interior of the lighthouse. The light is still equipped with the 1856 4th order Fresnel lens.
