Dutch Island Lighthouse stands on the southern tip of Dutch Island, a wildlife management area. The lighthouse went onto the Lighthouse Digest doomsday list in 2000 but has since been extensively restored by the Dutch Island Lighthouse Society (link to their web page below). The keeper's residence that was formerly attached was demolished in the 1960's. In 2001, the 250 mm lens that had been in use prior to 1947 was returned by a nearby resident who had had the lens stored for safe keeping for more than 20 years. The lighthouse was discontinued in 1979 and relighted in 2007 after renovation work done under a 2005 Federal grant.

Pros: stunning isolated location
Cons: Can only be reached by boat; cannot go inside

Recently renovated, the grounds of this lighthouse are on an island just off Fort Getty. It's an easy boat or kayak trip from Fort Getty to Dutch Island (car parking fees at Fort Getty are steep, though). Bring a picnic lunch and camera, and sit next to the lighthouse and marvel at its beauty and isolation. Make sure to pack your garbage when you leave.
