DescriptionRose Island Lighthouse was built in 1870 and designed by Albert Dow. The lighthouse was inactive from 1971-1993 and has been reactivated. The lighthouse has been restored beginning in 1992 to its' 1912 appearance and is now maintained by the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation. The keeper's residence is a two story Empire-style wood house with an integral 35 foot tall octagonal tower.
There are two guest rooms on the second floor that are available year round for one week stays by volunteer keepers. Access to the site is restricted from April 15 through August 15 because of nesting birds. Otherwise the lighthouse is open to visitors from July 1 through Labor Day (admission fee).
