DescriptionSands Point lighthouse isn't very far from Execution Rocks and was built to warn ships away from dangerous reefs 1600 yards north of the point. Unfortunately, the lighthouse is surrounded by a large estate that was built following the 1917 purchase of a large tract of land by a wealthy New Yorker. After the light station was closed, it was put up for auction and the State of NY tried to buy the land and light station but lost out to the protestations of the wealthy estate owner. The estate was later sold to William Randolph Hearst (1927-1940). The only view of this lighthouse, unfortunately, is from the water. A couple of shots of the Sands Point light are shown above.
