DescriptionThe lighthouse lies at the northern end of the Sound of Islay. There is no road to the lighthouse so reliefs were made by boat from Port Askaig or the distillery at Coila.
There are spectacular views looking across to Jura and up the Sound. On the clearest of days Dubh Artach can be seen nearly twenty miles away. Ruvaal is one of four major lighthouses on Islay. The keepers families lived in Bowmore. Islay is the southernmost of the Inner Hebridean islands.
