Description
A 30 foot stone tower was established on Sheffield Island in 1828. Mariners, however, complained that the light from it wasn't bright enough, prompting Congress to appropriate funds for a new lighthouse on the island in 1867. The lighthouse was built in 1868 and consisted of a 46 foot tower. The lighthouse was subsequently deactivated in 1902. The lighthouse has been extensively renovated and is now open in the summer for tours with a resident summer keeper on the island. Tours are available through the Norwalk Seaport Association (http://www.seaport.org). Much of Sheffield Island is now a wildlife preserve.

Several hurricanes during the 1990s caused extensive erosion of the island and wire baskets filled with stone are now being placed in an effort to prevent further erosion.
