July 16, 2010
For the third year in a row, award-winning graphic artist Alan Claude from
Farmingdale, Maine, has generously donated one of his stunning Grand View (36" X
53") lighthouse prints for a raffle with proceeds benefiting the Maine
Lighthouse Museum and the American Lighthouse Foundation. Although the raffle
winner may select a Grand View-size print featuring any of the lighthouses in
Claude's collection, the new images on display at the Maine Lighthouse Museum
and at the American Lighthouse Foundation are Midcoast favorites: Curtis Island
Lighthouse and Owls Head Lighthouse. There are 19 posters to choose from. Images
maybe seen at www.alanclaude.com

With Camden Harbor's sentinel, the Curtis Island Lighthouse, Claude has managed
to capture the extraordinary beauty of this icon, located in what is
indisputably one of the most picturesque harbors in Maine. Many visitors to the
Midcoast area will recognize the print from the cover of this year's Discovery
Coast Magazine, the official visitors' guide for the Penobscot Bay Regional
Chamber of Commerce. The Owls Head Lighthouse print pays tribute to the tiny,
beloved tower, perched 100 feet above sea level, which has guided ships to safe
harbor since 1825.

"The striking architecture and dramatic history of lighthouses are
understandably inspirational. We are grateful to artists, like Alan Claude, who
have supported organizations that work to preserve the buildings, artifacts, and
stories that are muses for so many people," said Dot Black, Director of the
Maine Lighthouse Museum.

"Mr. Claude's artistic talents and passion for lighthouses provides people with
a wonderful opportunity to enjoy views of some of Maine's notable beacons all
year long in their homes through his stunning renditions, while helping to save
our coastal lights and the history associated with them, for the future," says
Bob Trapani, Jr., Executive Director of the American Lighthouse Foundation.
There are also 2nd & 3rd place prizes - 18" x 24" Offset Lithograph Print Signed
by the Artist ($75 value).

Maine's historic Little River Lighthouse on an island off the coast of the tiny
fishing community of Cutler honored the 4th of July with the unfurling of a
large American flag from the top of the lighthouse.

The giant flag was first used on October 2, 2001 when the lighthouse, which had
been dark for 26 years, was relighted as a Beacon of Freedom to the world after
the terrorist attack on September 11. Since then, the large flag has only been
displayed on special occasions and patriotic holidays.

The lighthouse will host its first Open House of the Season on July 10th, from
10am to 1pm, and boat rides will be provided to the island. Refreshments will be
available on the island.
Funds to support the Lighthouse Museum are being raised through the sale of dedication bricks that will become a permanent part of the landscaped walkway and stairway entrance to the museum. Donors can purchase bricks that will be laser engraved with names a...nd special messages then installed in the walkway. Personalized bricks are appropriate for gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other special events as well as memorials and dedications to loved ones. Children love to see their name in a brick walkway.

Purchasing bricks helps to support the Maine Lighthouse Museum which is the largest museum of its kind in the nation. It is unique in that it keeps the nation’s heritage of lighthouses and lighthouse keepers for future generations to enjoy.

Brick donors and future generations will enjoy their engraved bricks for many years to come while supporting and beautifying the Lighthouse Museum.

The boat trip was organized with Uncle Sam Boat Tours who did a spectacular job of positioning use photographically to shoot the lights that we saw on the segment of the river from Rock Island to Windmill Point.

Coming out of the marina at Alexandria Bay you're almost on top of the Sunken Rock lighthouse seen in the photographs below. The light is white with a green lantern and stands atop a rock not far from the navigable channel. The lighthouse has been decommissioned but is still used as a channel marker and is well maintained.

My trip on the St Lawrence River was based out of Alexandria Bay, NY in the Thousand Islands region of the St Lawrence River. (Actually, there are 1800+ islands in this segment of the river!)

I was staying at Captain Thomson's Resort and by the luck of the draw among the NELL members staying there, I got a spectacular corner room with a view off the balcony of Boldt Castle on Heart Island directly across from the resort and out a side window of Sunken Rock lighthouse just down river. The first group of photos was shot from my balcony the evening before the trip on the river.
The photo chronicle from my trip to the St Lawrence has now been completely finished on the page on my website. All of the photos are linked to pages with larger versions. Click any of the photos and you'll be taken to the larger image.

As I have time this weekend, I'll probably start adding some of the photos to this thread.

As I've noted on the Lake Superior trip thread, I've just finished a trip a week ago with NELL (New England Lighthouse Lovers) on the St Lawrence River. That trip covered the stretch of the river from Rock Island on the west to Ogdensburg, NY/Wexford, Ontario, Canada on the Canadian side of the river.

I'm in the process of getting a Marine Photography spread written on that trip for Great Laker magazine so hopefully, I'll be able to get some if not all of this thread assembled in fairly short order.
_________________
Gary

I need to get back to adding photos to this trip thread to get it finished. I've taken another trip on the St Lawrence river to photograph the lights along the river between Rock Island and Ogdensburg, including the lights and range lights on the Canadian side of the river along that stretch.
_________________
Gary

Across from the main gate is a baseball field and Little John Road. Drive down Little John Road about 300 feet to a small parking lot. Or you can go down Shore Road past the main gate to a secondary gate on your left. You can park right there and walk through a footgate (it's probably closer than the baseball parking).

IMHO, sunrise at Portland Head is a much better photo experience than sunset.

Thanks for the update, Ken. And I agree that sunrises are great at Portland Head!
Trip Reports :: Point Bonita and Point Reyes from San Francisco

Subject: Point Bonita and Point Reyes from San Francisco
Posted: Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:29 pm (GMT -4)
Topic Replies: 0

I visited San Francisco this week with my family. It was not primarily a lighthouse trip, but I got my family to agree to rent a car for a day and try to make it to both Point Bonita and Point Reyes. The day was Sunday, Feb 28.

Point Bonita is a beautiful and exquisite lighthouse, and well worth a visit. It's in a grand location, and it's a beautiful, exquisite little structure. You can't climb to the tower, but you can visit the building and chat with several park rangers at the station and see some small exhibits.

I was extremely disappointed, however, that I failed to make it to Point Reyes Light on the same day. The park service makes it rather difficult to visit both Point Bonita and Point Reyes in the same day (given a San Francisco start). It can be done, and I almost succeeded, but there are a lot of obstacles to such a trip.

Point Bonita is only open three days a week: Sat, Sun, Mon from 12:30-3:30. You can't access the lighthouse outside those hours, as there is a tunnel which is sealed during off-hours. There is also a foot bridge to the lighthouse, which at this time (it's scheduled to be rebuilt next year) only 2 people are allowed to cross at a time, so there is a long wait to get to the lighthouse itself, and another wait to get off. I spent about an hour and fifteen minutes at Point Bonita, from when it opened at 12:30 to roughly 1:45.

From Point Bonita, the drive to Point Reyes is something around 2 hours. I made the big mistake of taking Route 1, which is exceptionally windy, curvy, and slow. I should have taken Route 101, which is longer in distance but a faster drive. Being ignorant of these details, I decided to follow the advice of my GPS unit and take Route 1. If I had taken Route 101, it's possible I might have made it to Point Reyes sooner, but I'm not sure of that.

As it was, I arrived at Point Reyes around 3:20, which should have been just enough time to visit the light (the lantern room is open till 4, and the grounds till 4:30). But there was a catch: during the winter (Dec to April), you have to park away from the lighthouse at the Kenneth C. Patrick visitor Center and take a shuttle bus to visit the lighthouse. Tickets for the bus stop selling at around 3pm. So, even though there was a nearly empty shuttle bus sitting at the Patrick visitor center when I arrived at 3:20, I was not allowed to board it to visit the Point Reyes lighthouse.

There was an alternative available: I could have waited until 5:30 for the road to the lighthouse to open. However, since I was traveling with two exhausted, nauseous children, I decided to forgo waiting so late. My kids were feeling ill due to the windy drive up Route 1, and tired from a cross-country flight the previous day, and waiting till 5:30 would have meant a late drive back to San Francisco. The family had put up with a lot just to get me to Point Reyes. So I decided not to wait it out.

It does seem to me that the timings could be tweaked a bit to allow for families to visit both lighthouses in one day. The timing here is so tight, I'm not sure I would have made it, even if I had known about the 3pm cutoff for the shuttle (it's on the web site, but I didn't understand that the wording "Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is CLOSED" meant "You can't get to the lighthouse"). In retrospect, I would have had a much better day if I had spent my afternoon at Point Bonita and the Marin headlands, and given up on Point Reyes altogether.

Anyhow, I post this information for future lighthouse visitors who may try to follow in the future.
